*Shereen*

I pulled off bits of peppers from my slice of pizza.

“7amood it3arf ma7ib peppers! You keep ordering peppers.” I stared at the slice grumpily. “Goomow” I said to the peppers.

He pulled the slice away and started pushing off the pepper pieces with a fork. “Wallah chinich my baby!” he said.

I raised an eyebrow and he reddened.

“Baby…as in a kid ya3ni mo 8a9di ina 7abeebty you know…” he muttered more to himself than to me.

I decided now was a good time to start the DVD.

“Ayy movie?”

“The Notebook!”

“AGAIN? 7u66ay shai thani yalla!”

“Mabee uff you said I can pick tonight.”

I got into my favourite movie-watching position, scrunched up into a ball in the corner of the huge couch, surrounded by cushions and covered with my blanket. 7amood took over the rest of the couch and we settled down and watched in silence.

I suddenly felt his hand flicking my hair. I ignored it.

Five minutes later he flicked it again. I was too into the movie, all I could do was turn slightly and say “Hmm??” He shook his head and turned his attention to the screen.

On screen, Noah was pulling in the rowboat from the river. Rain was pouring and the sky was grey.

Allie: Why didn’t you write me? Why? It wasn’t over for me…I waited for you for seven years, and now it’s too late!

Noah: I wrote you 365 letters…I wrote you everyday for a year!

Allie: You wrote me?

Noah: Yes! It wasn’t over; it still isn’t over!

As Noah pulled Allie in for that famous heart wrenching kiss, I felt my head being pulled back.

“7AMOOD SHFEEK!”

He jumped, a curl still wrapped around one of his fingers, he was twirling it roughly. I paused the movie and turned to face him.

“Hidd sha3ri Mo7ammed…” I said slowly.

“Ok…sorry.” He took the strand of hair he was still holding and used it to tickle my nose.

“7amoooooood bas la!” I giggled and smacked his hand away.

He looked straight into my eyes, making me nervous; I turned away and reached for the remote to play the movie again.

“Inzain ma giltee lee”

“Hmm?”

“Min thaak ili chifna fe GoldCoast? Ilagra3?”

“Just a guy I know…isma Yousif.”

“Ok…” he smiled and settled back down onto his cushions, waving his hand, indicating that I should go ahead and press play.

I knew that he had more to say on this subject; I could imagine him asking me the questions that were undoubtedly swirling around in his head. The main thing I could hear him repeating over and over was, “take care Reeno”. But he needn’t worry, its been over a week since I last heard from Yousif and I was starting to think that our fairytale ferry ride was just that, a figment of my imagination.

I heard a key turn in the lock and light filled the darkened living room as Yazzy opened the door.

“Hellooo!”

7amood raised his head sleepily, I hadn’t realised he was nodding off.

“Wa3 7amood hnee low adree chan I slept over at Maytha’s” Yazzy laughed and wiggled in between us on the couch, pulling some cushions away from 7amood and trying to pull my blanket away from me. We were caught in a blanket tug-o-war until she finally said, “mabee 7arr a9lan” and turned to 7amood.

“Mo7ammed 9adee8i…”

“Tawich itgooleen wa3 7amood il7een 9irt 9adee8ich?”

“5asi agool lak wa3 agi9 lsaanee if I ever do!”

“Gi9ay yalla Reeno get the kitchen scissors!”

I got up as if to get them and she pulled me back down.

“What’s with the violence! You guys are watching The Notebook wain il 7ubb!”

“7amood kaan ragid, shakla he had a violent dream!”

“WWE Smackdown” he nodded at Yazzy menacingly.

“Maaaami!” She propped a cushion in between them. “Inzain listen to me…today I was googling things to do in Briz and GoldCoast and I decided we HAVE to go Zorbing!”

7amood and I looked at her blankly.

“Um…sheye6la3 thee exactly?” I asked.

“E7u6oonkum in a giant ball filled with soapy water o they roll you down a hill!” Yazzy squeaked excitedly.

“La la, yannat refeejti 7amood choof shga3da t5arbi6!”

“Yasmeeno mn 9ijich intai?” 7amood laughed at her as if expecting her to jump up and scream “At’3ashmaaaaaaaaaaaar”

“Ee shfeekum! We’re going this weekend I decided.”

“A5aaaaaaf mabee roo7oo broo7kum.” I shrieked.

“Chub. We’re all going. I would’ve gone with Maytha bas her cousins coming from GoldCoast this weekend fa matigdar o a9lan 5awafa akthar minich hal bnaya.”

“You need more adventurous friends…” I said.

“True…bas I’ll settle for you guys lai ma a7a9il le a7ad 3adil!”

I was floating along, someone’s strong hands holding my shoulders and walking me towards a beautiful clear blue sea. The waves twinkled with the sunlight and seagulls dotted the white sands around us. “I wanna be a bird” I said, and a beautiful voice replied “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird…”

We walked into the sea, stopping when we were knee-deep in water and staring down at the tiny fish that swam around us in tight formations. I looked back up, expecting to see Yousifs face smiling down at me; instead it was Him, his angry eyes bore holes in my shocked face as I let go of the hand I was clutching in mine.

“Mabeech! Matfihmeen 5ala9 it’s over!”

I felt myself being swallowed by the ocean around me; deeper and deeper I sank until I felt every last breath in my body cease…

I sat up with a start, dark patches on my pillow where my tears had fallen. I put both hands on my face to wipe away the tears and just let them rest there, supporting my heavy head. I sat in that position for a few minutes trying to get my breathing back to a normal speed and to stop the hot tears that were still sliding down my cheeks to my chin.

I got up to get some water, but as I passed Yazzy’s door I knew that the only thing that would make me feel better right now was to talk to her. I knocked on her door softly and prepared myself to retell the dream; the same dream I had once dreamt every single night before waking up in tears and calling her at 3 am. It’s been 7 months since the last time I’d had this dream and I had to wake her up for its unwelcome return.
