Standing still
at the bus stop;
a black man on a bicycle
cycles by
in his bright red
t-shirt and shorts;
a reddish blur;
the moment we
connect,
his sweaty, male
body odour
is thrust into my nostrils.
for a brief
point in time.

Sunday afternoon.
Coming out of Baker Street station. The thin woman, so young, but so old, sits cross-legged, head down, head up, blue eyes blinded by dejection. She says: Spare change please.
A lump immediately forms in my throat and strains my senses. Was it a primeval cry of protest? No, but my empathy overwhelms me.
Walking down [...]

Early on a bright Sunday morning, I am strolling through the London park. The air is crisp and fresh. The skies are a vibrant soft blue and the clouds bright scattered and puffy.
On my right, several couples with young children have already chosen a gathering spot next to a tree that will shade them later [...]

Previously on Now What?…

“Yalla 7abeebty, m3laiih, ha, trayagty?”

“La 5alty, an6erich.”

They both walked together to the dining room, samo bsmilla, and they started eating their breakfast.

——————————–

That day passed as Hanouf had lunch with her Aunt and later on went to her parent’s house for dinner. Her whole family was there including her cousins, uncles and aunts, and her grandmother and grandfather.

When she came back home her Aunt was out and she went up to her floor. She entered the bathroom, took a quick refreshing shower, dried up, applied some vanilla sented lotion and wore her night gown. It felt so good to be home, she thought.

Meanwhile, in London, the guys were lounging around on the sofa and chairs watching a random football match on tv.

“Faree8hum zftt.” Abdulaziz said blankly.

“O 7ares’hum azfatt.” Mansour followed, playing wth a strand of his short curly hair.

“3ala el a8al fii kam mn decent player…” Ra2id watched them play.

“Mno, bs 7 oo 13?” Abdulaziz flipped through the channels.

Ra2id was laying down on the sofa, his legs extended forward on the coffee table munching on a Snickers bar. Abdulaziz was on his right side with his legs folded beneath him and the remote in his hands, finding a decent channel to watch on a Sunday night. Mansour was on the ground, his back on the carpet and his hands beneath his head.

It was nearly two days since Hanouf went back to Qatar and he was bored, sitting in his living room with his friends over at his place. The two boys started up a random conversation but Ra2id was too bored to even listen.

He got up and went to his room. He got his BB out of his pocket and opened his call logs and called Hanouf. She didn’t answer until after the fourth ring.

“Mmm…” she answered sleepily.

“Inty naymaa?” he whispered.

“Mhmm…la la, 3ady…I’m up.”

“La, rj3y namy, akalmich bachr.”

“Ok, 5ala9, bs akalmkk bukra, ok?”

“Ok, yalla, good night…”

“You too.”

He really missed her and wanted to be with her, but he couldn’t. He was going to finish his studies and then go back to Doha, that’s what the summer courses were for.

The second he ended the call, Abdulaziz opens the door.

“Tabyy enroo7 Cocoon?”

“Ee yalla…”

He got ready, put on his jacket, slipped his wallet and BB in his pockets and out they went. When they got there they sat by their usual table near the windows and starting choosing their starters and main courses.

“…and yeah, we’ll all have a diet coke.”

“Sure.”

The waiter left and Abdulaziz started talking…

“B3d Ra2id, sh5bar Hanouf?”

He felt Mansour eyeing Abdulaziz.

“Haha, la Man9our 3adyy, walla ya 3zouz, shagoulik? ’3air ena y3ni el progess 7ada minor…” he frowned.

“Ra2id, enzain, y3ni shnawy etsawy el7een?”

“Madryy ya 3zouz, madry…”

“Bs enta et7b’ha, shloun et’hedha chii?…” Man9our asked, confused.

“O la b3d, ana ma5th 9aify 3ashan a5ali9 bsr3aa, o ma buga shay w n7awl baitna el ydeed…”

“Ra2id, tara tgdar etkamil drastkk mta ma taby, you know that. Bs laish hadait’ha…?”

“3zouz, mo eb eedy 9adegny, bs hy kanat ma5nouga o 7asait hal shay feeha…”

“Enzain, bs tara ma fee ela 7al wa7d…” Man9our patted him on his shoulder.

“Ely huu?”

“Both you and I know what it is…”

Mansour said while Abdulaziz nodded his head in agreement, and by that, he kept wondering and wondring…

The next morning Hanouf woke up to find two missed calls and one BBM from Yara. Just as she was about to open her BBM her phone vibrated in her hand. It was Yara.

“Good morning.” Hanouf said as she pulled the covers off her body.

“Hanoufooo!!!!! I’m an AUNT!!!!!”

“Tma’9er rabbaaaat!!!!!!”

“EEEE!!!!”

“Aww 7abeebtyyy! Bl mbaraaaaaaaaaaaakkkk!!!! Awwwww, I’m sooo happy, ha, shsamaitooha?!!”

“Jowaher!”

“Allaaaaaah cuteeeeeee Alla y7af’9haa!”

They kept on giggling and Hanouf congradulated her. They continued chitchatting for about five minutes until they closed the line. They cancelled their plans for today and they decided to go out for dinner tomorrow, and that Hanouf would Tama’9er tomorrow afternoon.

She got up from bed, washed uo for prayers and brushed her teeth, prayed and changed her dress. When she was done, she went downstairs and saw her Aunt sitting on the couch waiting for her. They exchanged formalities and both got up to the dining room for some breakfast.

The usual routine happened as they had tea in the living room with the tv on Al Arabia and a newspaper in her Aunts hands. While she was sipping her warm green tea, her phone vibrated in her pocket. This time it was her cousin Jude.

“Ahlan ahlan.” Hanouf answered happily.

She loved her cousin to death and was as close with her as she was with Yara, although a bit more closer with Yara. Jude was as old as Hanouf.

“Ahlan feech 7ubby, sh5bariich?”

“Tmaam, inty shloonich?”

“HAHA! Ana? Well, hmm, 5alny agoolich shloun…Mama o Baba tawhum el 9ub7 they travelled o ana home alone, fa glt laish ma a3zm my most beautiful cousin etyee t’ttanan 3endina?”

“Haha, aham shay, I bet by know enty shaga el 7aljj!”

“Duhhh, walla nothing personal, bs y3ni come on, we do need a break from them once in a while mthl ma hum they need a break from us.” Hanouf felt a huge grin form on Jude’s face.

“Judoo, uhhhh! Shagoolich ’3air you’er so right haha.”

“Again…duhhhh! Enzain, elyoum at two, o glt 7g Shahood o Hendoo eyoun b3d.”

They were Hanouf’s sisters.

“Perfect!”

“5alaa9 3ayal, I’ll see you at two!”

“Yup, between, tabeen ayeeb shay m3ay?”

“La la maye7tay, I already sent Raju eyebly a’3raath.”

“Ok then, ciao bello.”

“Adios amigos! Oh, nsait agoolich, o you’ll sleep over, maly 5i9 if you can’t, cuz you will!” and she closed the phone.

She excused herself and went up the stairs to get ready. She packed her bag with all the essentials she’ll need and everything. She changed into a long, floral beach dress in green and wore her bikini under it. She prayed the Duhr prayers. She applied some light make up and accessorized with some stylish gold bangles and studs. When she finished she lastly put in her tanning oil and lotion along with some sun screen and baby oil.

It was one and lunch was ready. She went down the stairs taking her bags and Abaya in the other hand and went to call for her Aunt. She sat and had lunch with Ra2id’s mother and she was done around 20 minutes later.

“Yalla 3ayal 5alty, ana asta2′thin.”

“Wain ray7a yumma?”

“Baroo7 bait bnt 5alty Haya, o banam 3ndehum elyoum, tamreen 3ala shay?”

“La 7abeebty, tuwakely 3al Alla.”

“Inshalla.”

“Yalla, m3 el salama.”

“Alla ysalmich.”

She wore her Abaya and grabbed Ra2id’s car keys and left the house. As she was driving down the road to the Corniche she danced and sang one of Abdulmajeed’s heartbreaking love songs, La Zaad.

When she finally reached West Bay, she stopped by security and opened her window.

“Waleed Al-Flani vila please.”

“Sure ma’am.” and the gates opened.

She drove through the streets and finally got to Jude’s street. As she entered the curve to Jude’s street she could see Hend’s street. She slowed down and parked her car next to hers and got out. She got down and opened the bag seat car door and got her belongings out and walked in the front gates of the house.

As she got in from the main doors of the house she took her Abaya off and placed it on her right arm while she took the cars keys and put them on the round glass table infront of her. She put her bag down and walked to the near by closet and hung her Abaya inside. When she was finally done, she called for the girls.

“Juuuuuuuudeee, Heeeeeeendd, Shahooooooooodd?!”

She didn’t hear anything and assumed they were already tanning outside. She walked through the living room and made her way to the kitchen. She opened the fridge and got herself a cold bottle of water and walked out. She went through the back door and saw the girls. All three of them were already in their bikini’s, each with her sunglasses on and magazine in hand, and absolute silence.

“BOO!” Hanouf shouted.

They all stung up, frightened.

“Yal kalbaa!” Jude ran to her, hugging her.

“Hanoufoooo!” both her sisters complained walking over to her.

“Tadroon how much I miss yam3atna?” Hanouf walked with them, side by side.

“WAYID!” Hend answered.

Hanouf then went and got changed . She took her dress off and started applying the tanning oil and lotions she braught along. She also took out the stack of magazines she braught along with her and her book.

“Hanouf, tara I got you a frappaccino mn Carribou Coffee, it’s in the kitchen.” Shahad said, putting her glasses back on .

“Thank you! Aww, you know your sister well!”

She walked in the house from the glass doors of the blue room -the room that overlooks the pool and garden- with a towel wrapped around her waist an into the kitchen. She gets her frappaccino and walks out to have a little fun in the sun, well, not technically; she’s going to tan.

3 hours passed and the girls were getting a bit dizzy from the sun and heat. They had their final dip in the pool before getting out to shower.

“Hanouf, tabeen shay mn Mandarine?” Jude asked her.

“Laa, into?”

“Ee, bnroo7 enyeeblena ana o el banaat, o b3edha na5th cruise. Tyeen?”

“La la 3ady, I’ll just chillax hny 3la ma etyoon…”

“Ok then, e7na bnroo7 nsba7 o njhaz o n6la3 b3diha.”

“Sure.”

Two hours later the girls left to Mandarine and to cruise afterwards while Hanouf showered, changed, prayed and straightened her hair. She went up to Jude’s room and threw herself on the bed, boy did the sun have a real bad effect on her. She got up and walked over to the window overloking the sea.

Jude’s house was in West Bay and her house was directly infront of the sea, but it was somewhat consealed from the other houses next to their’s.

As she stared out into the wonderful sea, watching the light waves crashing into each other, she headed out Jude’s door and straight down the stairs. She got her iPod from her bag and put on her white jersey, to warm her from the rising wind. She tied her hair into a loose ponytail keeping her fringe down. She wore her beige UGG boots and tucked her skinny’s into them perfectly.

As she was done, she went through the living room and into the Blue Room and opened the sliding doors. She walked till the end of the garden and past the white gates. She felt the wind blowing her fringe around as she went and sat by the sea shore. She put on her ear phones, put her iPod on shuffle and stared out into the horizon watching the beautiful sunset as it took her breath away.
